ππ» Apple MacBook Pro M1 vs. MacBook Air M2 – Real Talk After Living With Both
Alright, here’s the deal. I spent legit weeks bouncing between the MacBook Pro M1 and the MacBook Air M2 — not just poking around, but actually living with them for real stuff: work, Netflix, editing video, way too many Chrome tabs, the works. And you know what? These machines have more personality differences than you’d expect from two shiny aluminum slabs.
π️ Looks & Feel
Can’t lie — first impression? The Air M2 is the hot one at the party. Flat sides, almost edge-to-edge screen, kind of futuristic vibe. Pro M1? Classic Apple, little bit chunkier, rocking the Touch Bar like it’s 2017 (take that how you want).
My 2¢:
πΉ Air M2 is the head-turner. Super modern.
πΉ Pro M1 is still luxe, just feels like it’s from a slightly earlier era.
⚙️ Performance in Real Life
I ran these bad boys through the ringer:
- 30 Chrome tabs brawling
- Final Cut Pro for some “serious editing” (translation: making TikToks and pretend documentaries)
- Zoom/Teams calls non-stop
- Spotify blasting, email chains, VS Code for coding at 2 AM
Here’s what shook out —
π§ Pro M1:
Didn’t break a sweat. Yeah, it’s got an actual fan, so it never gets cooked, and chugs along just fine, even when you’re throwing heavy video stuff at it.
Literally didn’t slow down, even after like, hour-long video calls and constant editing.
π§ Air M2:
Quieter than a library at midnight because fan? Ha, what fan? Zilch. It’s snappy, too — honestly, day-to-day, it FEELS faster than the Pro.
But, start pushing hard (Final Cut, marathon Zooms)? She gets a little toasty, doesn’t love being overworked for hours.
So, here’s my take:
πΉ Day-to-day, the Air M2 rips. For most people, it’s way more muscle than you actually need.
πΉ If you’re a “let’s export a movie while running ten apps” person, Pro M1 won’t melt under pressure. The Air? Ehh, maybe not.
π Battery Life
I was honestly surprised here:
Pro M1 lasted FOREVER. Like, 18–20 hours of normal stuff. I forgot the charger on a work trip and still survived.
Air M2? Still super solid at 14–16 hours, but burn through a few video calls and it’ll tap out faster than the Pro.
So, yeah:
π If you’re a road warrior or just forgetful, the Pro M1 battery is insane.
π Display, Audio & Keys
Displays look crisp on both — Retina life, you know? Air M2 bumps the brightness a bit more (500 nits vs 400), not a game changer but hey, brighter is nicer I guess.
Speakers? Both sound great, Air M2 gets a bit “fuller” in the mids, whatever that means — basically, it’s a tiny laptop, don’t expect your house to shake.
Keyboards are basically twin vibes. I smashed out half this review on both and couldn’t tell the diff.
And the Touch Bar on Pro M1… eh. Looks flashy, only useful if you’re deep into Photoshop or wanna slide through YouTube.
π Ports, Charging & The “Ugh” Details
Both rock USB-C/Thunderbolt 3. But seriously? The Air M2 brought back MagSafe charging — about freaking time. Love not hogging a USB-C just to juice up.
No SD slots, zero HDMI — wanna live your dongle life? That’s the price of style, baby.
π§ Which One Would I Actually Recommend?
If you want a laptop that looks sick, weighs nothing, runs fast for school or work or honestly most creative stuff — MacBook Air M2, not even close. Super modern, easy to lug anywhere, and plenty powerful.
But… If you’re THAT GUY or GIRL who’s always editing video, running serious workloads, or you just think of “battery anxiety” as the ultimate nightmare? Still hard to beat the Pro M1, even in 2024.
π My Totally Subjective Ratings
Feature Pro M1 Air M2
Performance 8.5/10 9/10
Battery Life 9.5/10 8/10
Design & Portability 8/10 9.5/10
Display & Audio 8/10 8.5/10
Value for $ 9/10 9/10
π― TL;DR (Because You’re Probably Skimming)
Most people? Go MacBook Air M2 — it’s slick, fast, future-ready. If you’re obsessed with battery or just love editing giant videos, hang onto the Pro M1.
